I found that using sudo wireshark from a terminal works ok, but leaves a terminal window open. tcpdump -i eth1 icmp0 4 If we want to find the ICMP echo replies only. The advantage of this solution is, while dumpcap/tcpdump still run as root, you can run Wireshark as a ordinary user and load the data you captured previously, so effectively this is kinda "privilege separation by hand". You could also use tcpdump for this purpose. dumpfile", which will dump the packets to the file "dumpfile" in the current working directory. A much safer solution would be to su(1) to root, then use the bundled dumpcap to dump the data (for example, you can evoke dumpcap by using "dumpcap -w. However, this remains unsecure as the dissectors, the parts of Wireshark which parse the captured data, run with root privileges as they did before. Please note that you don't have to login as root when starting your computer, you can use su(1) or sudo( for that purpose. Therefore, you have to have root privileges when starting Wireshark, else you can't capture data. I can capture just fine from a linux virtual machine. The capture.pcap file produced is readable with Wireshark To view the contents of the capture, use. You can see in the picture below that the winpcap driver is running on my system. Resolving The Problem Enter Ctrl+C to terminate the trace. Finally, if the problem is still not resolved, it may be that dumpcap was not correctly configured, or there is something else preventing it from operating correctly. It seems to be an issue with the winpcap driver. sudo dpkg-reconfigure wireshark-common sudo usermod -a -G wireshark USER Then log out and log back in (or reboot), and Wireshark should work correctly without needing additional privileges.
#Probleme wireshark no interfaces found update
After the creators update when I start wireshark the only interfaces that show up are from USBpcap. Running Wireshark (or any other network capture/analyzer, for that matter) on Linux needs root privileges. Wireshark no longer detects interfaces after creators update.
